Apiculturist Job Description
Seeding Africa is a charitable organization founded by Africans on the continent and in the
Diaspora. The main aim of this organization is to source and supply organic seeds to local farming
communities on the continent to feed its people, thus Feeding our Future. So that these
communities can produce a much-needed consumable and make a profit for their own growth
and sustainability. We are looking for an Apiculturist to join our team on a volunteer basis.
Required Skills and Abilities
As an Apiculturist you will look after apiaries or beehive sites, with the main aim of producing
honey. The hives produce honey, wax, pollen, and other products for sale to the public. You will
also provide pollination services to horticultural and seed crop producers. Bees are an excellent
aid in pollination, thus farmers growing fruit, vegetable crops and seeds will make use of our
service.
- Good bee-handling skills, knowing when and how to approach bees
- Not be afraid of stings
- Good organisation and time management skills
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Concerned about environmental issues
- Self-motivated and willing to work hard
- Able to plan ahead
- Able to accurately record information
- Enjoy working outside
- Good eyesight
- Fit and healthy, with no allergies to bee stings or pollen
- Knowledge of bee health and disease control
Duties & Responsibilities
- Build and Repair Hives as required
- Checking the food supply, and health and laying ability of the queen bee’s.
- Place boxes on hives to prepare for honey production
- Extract honey from the comb using extractors
- Feeding of hives to ensure sufficient food supply
- Continually inspect hives for pests and overall health
- Laboratory skills and knowledge
- Monitoring of hives and general surroundings
- Ensuring hives are in a healthy and productive state
- Providing reports to management on the condition of hives, bee’s and also analysing data
and presenting it. - Identifying areas of improvement and implementing them.
